League Of Nations - Revision Notes

Revision Notes

The League of Nations

  • Established in 1920 after World War I to maintain world peace and prevent another global conflict
  • Key goals: disarmament, collective security, and peaceful settlement of disputes
  • Weaknesses: lack of military force, unanimous decision-making, absence of major powers like the U.S.
  • Notable successes: settlement of the Aaland Islands dispute, humanitarian work, technical cooperation
  • Failures: inability to prevent aggression by Italy (Abyssinia), Japan (Manchuria), and Germany (Rhineland)
  • Ultimately led to its downfall and replacement by the United Nations in 1945
