Causes of World War II

  • Rise of Fascism and Militarism: Aggressive foreign policies of Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and Imperial Japan led to the outbreak of war.
  • Treaty of Versailles: Harsh terms of the treaty, such as war guilt clause and reparations, fueled resentment in Germany and contributed to the rise of Nazism.
  • Failure of the League of Nations: The League's inability to prevent aggression by the Axis powers weakened attempts to maintain peace.
  • Appeasement Policy: Western powers, especially Britain and France, pursued a policy of appeasement towards Hitler, which emboldened him to make further territorial demands.
  • German Expansionism: Hitler's ambition to unite all German-speaking people and expand Germany's borders led to the invasion of Poland in 1939, triggering the start of World War II.
